(In)valuable, (in)visible: the circular archive and value production in artistic spaces
Solo exhibithion at Nieuwe Vide Artspace, Haarlem
Archival images, printers, staircase, security camera, light tables, video, sound installation.
During the exhibition at Nieuwe Vide, the work continued to take on new forms and the exhibithion explored ways to give visibility to a production process that usually stays unseen. An archive moves through the space via a circular arrangement of printers and scanners. The maturity of the images shown in the exhibition were produced on the spot, using the printers in the space and images that were collected in the cabinet or gifted by visitors.
The exhibition featured multiple motion sensors. One connected to a copying machine, in this way creating a copy for every visitor walking by the machine. In the corner a security camera that made a picture every time it registered movement. In this way, visitors, volunteers, other artist and the artist themselves continuously expanded the living archive with more and more pictures and copies, filling the space, the floor and the wall’s.
By asking other artist to reply to questions about value in their art practices information was gathered. How much time do you spend in your studio, and do you think this is ‘enough’? Does the amount of time someone spends in a studio make them more of an artist? These are some of the questions from the questionnaire. The answers to the last question were printed on a receipt: What do you find most valuable in your art practice?
